How does a USB Jump Drive Work

The USB jump drive is certainly an advanced technological invention which has enabled people to store any type of data, and avail it whenever and wherever they want. In the earlier times, people used to store data in portable storage devices such as a floppy disk or CD. The CD technology was not much advanced though. However, the information stored on floppies could only be of 1.44 MB, which was way less than the memory capacity in pen drives of today. Moreover, there was also a possibility of the diskette getting corrupted easily. CDs were also used to store information, but didn't have benefits which are provided by jump drives.

Jump drives are small plug-and-play devices which are usually in a shape and size similar to our 'thumb'. However, they come in several other shapes and sizes, and principally differ in memory capacity and price. The memory capacity may range from as small as 64 MB to as big as 100 GB. These devices are a good alternative to CDs or other data storage devices; and are used to store mp3s, videos files, word documents, software, etc. There are some companies which have launched jump drives along with expandable memory card support which is a function that is less common in flash drives.

An USB jump drive is incorporated with important parts like an NAND flash memory chip, USB connector, and the USB mass storage controller. It has a printed circuit board which is covered with a hard case to preclude it from damaging. The NAND flash memory chip is entirely responsible for storing and preserving data, and is also incorporated in digital cameras. The 'crystal oscillator' is also one of the components present on the circuit board, which produces the drives main clock signal. All the above mentioned components, except the USB connector, are placed on the circuit board. An LED light also may be present which turns on when the drive is inserted in any operational USB port. The stored data can be erased and programmed in big blocks. Jump drives are incorporated with a technology which has a set of rows and columns, and a cell which includes two electronic transistors that are spaced using an oxide layer. They are non-volatile, and allow a user to access the stored data even if they are not connected to a computer or any other device with an USB port.

'How to install a jump drive' is a very simple process, you just have to insert it into the USB port of the computer or any other device with USB support facility. When it is connected to the computer, the operating system allows the drive to be used as a removable storage drive. If the computer has an operating system which doesn't recognize it, you would be required to install specific drivers which would make the OS compatible with the drive. Jump drives even don't need any battery or other external power source for power. When they are recognized by the computer, they can be viewed as removable drives in the 'my computer' window, after which you may view, modify, delete, and copy their contents to any other location on the computer's hard disk. The data in a conventional jump drive can be deleted and rewritten approximately a million times, and may be maintained for roughly a decade.

Jump drives are easy to operate and durable. If they are used in a smooth manner, they certainly can store and provide data for several years without problems.
